Grade 7s create terrariums

The Grade 7s created terrariums during their Natural Science class using their knowledge of photosynthesis.

During the lesson, the girls had to explain how the plants would survive without water and without opening the jar of the terrarium to replenish oxygen or carbon dioxide.

Out of the Hat - News from the Lady Principal

It is a pleasure for me to welcome the TWC community back to school and a special welcome to all the new girls and their parents.

Staff News
We also welcome new staff members to the Senior School:
- Maths Department: Zukiswa Stemele
- Boarding: Wendy Dlamini and Jean Rose (Housemothers)

Jenny Mathews has resigned to take up a position at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School and Judith Hawthorn has been employed to train the choir, and Jenny du Plessis will teach the Music theory lessons.

Holiday News
The Estate staff were very busy with the usual maintenance projects as well as upgrading different areas of the school and we thank Barry Moig, Theunis Ferreira and the Estate staff for all their hard work. The IT department was also kept busy with the installation of 55 new desk top computers.

Girls who went kayaking around Mauritius thoroughly enjoyed their trip and I would like to thank Les Willows for offering the girls this wonderful opportunity.

And 2019 starts…
The Grade 8 Orientation weekend, The Next Chapter, was held at the school before the start of the academic year. It provided an opportunity for parents and girls to meet each other and for the boarders to settle in before the year actually starts.

The Grade 12 girls and parents attended an academic meeting to outline the school’s expectations and the IEB requirements for 2019. This was followed by the Grade 12 Prayer Service, which sets the tone for the year.

2019 Projects
The new multi-purpose Aftercare building in the Junior School is near completion and, once swimming season is over, the building of the new pool stands will begin.

The Grade 12s have introduced their theme for the year to the school - The Amazing Race - and I am looking forward to a happy and productive 2019.

Out of the Hat - News from the Junior School Headmistress

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL
It was wonderful to have the girls back at school on Wednesday when we welcomed 348 Grade RRR – 7s, including 41 new girls. The school is an unnaturally quiet and dull place with no pupils. Girls are quickly settling into their daily routines of lessons and extra mural activities. Please encourage your daughters to get involved in school activities. Being a member of a choir/band or sporting team has many benefits.

NEW STAFF
We welcome the following new staff to the Junior School:
- Mrs Ellis Becker (Grade 4)
- Mrs Lisa Gerber (Grade RRR)
- Mrs Sue Tarr (Drama Grade 3-7 for Term 1)
- Mrs Carey Wilson (Grade 1)
Our intern teachers for 2019 are Vumile Nkosi, Samantha Evans; Hannah Jacob, Sarah Mcloughlin and Danielle Terblanche.

2019 THEME – Better Together
Our theme this year in the Junior School is Better Together. We are going to focus on relationships, communication, supporting and encouraging one another.

REMINDER:
JUNIOR SCHOOL PARENT/TEACHER MEETING
Date: Tue 22 January
Time: 18:30
Speaker: Gill Willows
A reminder to Junior School Parents to please attend the parent/teacher meeting on Tuesday 22 January at 18:30 in the Atrium. Gill Willows, a psychologist, will be our guest speaker. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your daughter’s class teacher, hear her explain the exciting challenges and routines for the new grade, and to meet the other parents in the class. A cocktail party will follow in the Atrium. Babysitting will be available from 18:30 – 20:30.

I wish you and your daughters a wonderful year in the Junior School.
