BREAKING NEWS - White Blazer Award

Citation read at assembly this morning by Ms Tasker

This morning it gives me great pleasure to award the highest award The Wykeham Collegiate can bestow on a pupil, a White Blazer.  The minimum criteria for a White Blazer are as follows:
  • The recipient should have achieved Honours in at least two areas of the school and Full Colours in a third area.
  • The areas are defined as Academic, Cultural and Sport.
  • The recipient should also have an exemplary disciplinary record and reflect and aspire to the values of The Wykeham Collegiate at all times.

This morning I would like to present a White Blazer to Jodie Koenig.

Meeting the criteria to be awarded a White Blazer is really challenging, but what makes Jodie’s achievement even more remarkable is: firstly - she has achieved Honours in all three areas; and secondly, Jodie suffered a serious health set back in the April of her Grade 10 year and essentially had to catch up 2 ½ years of her life, and in all areas – academic, sport, cultural, socially and emotionally.

I would like to read the following citation:

Cultural Achievement:
Jodie has been a committed member of the Wind Ensemble since Grade 8 and this year she is the Wind Ensemble leader and first saxophonist. In her recent Grade 6 saxophone examination, Jodie achieved an impressive 92%. She is always enthusiastic and positive and has a natural ability to improvise, both on the saxophone and piano. Jodie is a worthy recipient of Honours for Wind Ensemble.

Sporting Achievements:
Jodie is an outstanding sportswoman – both on and off the field. She has excelled in a number of sporting codes and her sportsmanship is a wonderful example to others. At Prize-Giving this year, Jodie was awarded the Clifton Parks Trophy for Sportswoman of the year.
She represented the TWC first team in hockey, indoor hockey, swimming, water polo and soccer. Jodie was vice-captain of the hockey and soccer teams and over the years she has been selected for the regional teams. Jodie also excelled in the pool and was selected for the KZN Water Polo team. She was awarded Honours for Water polo.

Academic Achievement:
Jodie always gives of her best.  Her report comments refer to her as being motivated, conscientious, determined, outstanding and so the list goes on.  And just in case she isn’t busy enough, she takes Advanced Programme Mathematics as an 8th subject.  In 2016 she was awarded the subject prizes for Music and AP Mathematics as well as the Morelle Phipson Endeavour Trophy for sustained industrious effort in a number of different areas. In 2017 she was awarded the subject prizes for Accounting and Music. Jodie was awarded Academic Honours last year and again this year.
Jodie is a humble person and as Head of School she has led well and by example. Jodie exemplifies our core values of honesty, integrity, respect for self and respect for others. She is also able to maintain a balance in all areas of school life and was awarded the Lauren and Kim Cousins Versatility award in recognition of this.

Jodie, you are a talented young woman, a wonderful role model to others and certainly a worthy recipient of a White Blazer. Congratulations.
